Edith’s story

I’m Edith, from Cambridge. In 2009 I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and not given any hope of ever improving. In fact, my condition deteriorates on an almost daily basis and it was becoming more and more difficult for me to remain in my own home. I find it distressing to be so dependent on others for everything, especially intimate care. It’s like being a baby again but with a grown-up brain and the whole thing can be very undignified and intrusive.

How did MiHomecare help me?

From the start, Mihomecare workers came along three times a day—morning, lunchtime and bedtime. My condition rapidly worsened and I couldn’t get about at all, having to spend all my time in a recliner chair. They always treated me with kindness, dignity and respect, and I really appreciated that they took the time to chat to me. Although their visits weren’t long, they were often the only people I saw all day, so it was very important to me that I didn’t feel that they were rushing to get away.

Because I was stuck in one position for most of the time, my skin was in danger of breaking down, and the careworkers helped this by moving me and rubbing soothing cream onto sensitive areas. They also spotted any changes in my condition and contacted the relevant people, like the district nurse.

Life became more and more difficult for me and, really, I couldn’t carry on as I was. The team helped in the process of decision-making about my future, liaising with my family and health professionals, to find suitable supported accommodation where my needs could be better managed.

What difference has it made in my life?

Parkinson’s is a horrible disease, and though it will only get worse, my careworkers have made what is happening to me as bearable as it can be, by preserving my dignity and self-respect, which is hugely important to me. They’ve also managed, against the odds, to keep my skin in good condition. I was very pleased that they were part of the decision-making process in finding my new accommodation. I’m able to be more independent here, with a proper set-up, but I still receive the three calls a day and I’m very grateful for that.
